How to Use Hellotracks Replays to Review Field Worker Routes

Field operations managers spend a significant portion of their working day making decisions based on what they think their field team did - where they went, how long they spent at each location, which routes they took, and whether they followed the plan. In most field service operations, this information arrives secondhand: through worker self-reports, check-in phone calls, or end-of-day summaries that are reconstructed from memory.

Hellotracks Replays changes this. Instead of relying on self-reported accounts of what happened in the field, operations managers can watch it play back exactly as it occurred - every trip, every stop, every speed change, mapped in chronological order on the exact route the worker actually traveled.

This guide covers what Replays is, how to use it, and the operational situations where it delivers the most value. Start a free trial - Location History and Replays are available in all Hellotracks plans.

What Hellotracks Replays Is

Replays is a playback feature within Hellotracks Location History. It allows administrators and operators to automatically replay a field worker's recorded movements for any given day on the map, watching their route unfold in sequence as it actually happened.

The feature works through two connected tools: the Time Slider and the Play button.

The Time Slider lets you manually scrub through a worker's day - dragging left or right to see where they were at any specific moment. Move the slider to 10:23am and the map shows exactly where the worker was at that time. Drag it forward to 2:47pm and the map updates to that moment. The Time Slider gives you precise, on-demand access to any point in the working day.

The Play button automates this process. Rather than manually dragging the slider, you click Play and the map animates the worker's route from the beginning of the day forward, replaying every trip and stop in chronological order. You watch the route unfold as a continuous playback.

Together, these tools give operations managers two modes of route review: precise point-in-time lookup via the Time Slider, and full-day playback via the Play button. See live location tracking for how Hellotracks captures this data in real time.

Understanding Waypoint Colors During Replay

As a route replays, the color-coded trail on the map provides immediate visual insight into how the worker was moving at each point. Hellotracks uses five waypoint colors to indicate movement type and speed:

Purple indicates faster movement - the worker was traveling at higher speeds, typically on highways or open roads between job sites.

Dark blue indicates moderate speed - moving at a pace slower than highway driving, typically on urban roads or in traffic.

Light blue indicates low speed - the worker was moving slowly, close to stopping, which often represents approaching a job site, navigating a parking area, or moving through a congested area.

White indicates location updates without consistent speed - this typically appears when GPS signal is intermittent or when the device is stationary but the signal is cycling.

Green indicates slow active movement - walking speed or movement indoors, such as a technician moving through a large facility or walking from a vehicle to a service entry.

During a Replay, these colors let you assess the worker's full day at a glance. A long purple segment between two job sites confirms efficient highway transit. A green segment within a job location confirms the worker was actively moving through the site. A white segment in an unexpected location may warrant a closer look.

Step-by-Step: How to Use Replays

Step 1: Access Location History

From the main Hellotracks menu, select Location and then Location History.

Step 2: Select the worker and date

Choose the team member you want to review. Select the date of interest from the calendar. To review a past day, click the date selector and choose any date within the location history retention period.

Step 3: Switch to Timeline view

Click the Timeline icon to switch from the Trips and Stops view to the Timeline view. The Timeline shows a chronological overview of all recorded events for the selected day: tracking activations and deactivations, logins and logouts, check-ins and check-outs at Places and Jobs, trips, and Job completions.

Step 4: Open the Time Slider

Click the back arrow at the top of the screen to open the Time Slider. The slider appears along the top of the map, spanning the full working day. Drag it left or right to jump to any specific point in time and see where the worker was at that moment.

Step 5: Click Play to start the Replay

Click the Play button on the map to begin the automatic Replay. The map animates the worker's route forward from the current Time Slider position, playing back every trip and stop in sequence. The route trail updates in real time as the Replay progresses, with waypoint colors showing movement speed at each point.

To pause the Replay at any point, click the Play button again. To jump to a specific moment, drag the Time Slider to that position.

Step 6: Return to live view

When you have finished reviewing, click the forward arrow at the top to dismiss the Time Slider and return to the standard live map view.

When Replays Delivers the Most Value

Incident investigation. When a client reports that a field worker was not at their site during a scheduled visit window, or when a dispute arises about arrival time, Replays provides an objective, visual reconstruction of exactly where the worker was and when. The playback shows the route taken, the arrival at the site, the time spent there, and the departure - creating an unambiguous factual record. This works alongside automatic check-in and check-out records to provide both visual and timestamped evidence.

Route efficiency review. Operations managers can identify whether workers are taking the most direct routes between job sites or whether there are consistent detours, inefficiencies, or unexplained stops that are extending transit times and reducing the number of jobs completed per day. This analysis informs future route optimization planning improvements.

Compliance verification. For field service businesses with clients who require proof that service was delivered at specific locations during specific windows, Replays provides a visual, playable record of exactly what happened. Used alongside automated proof of service documentation, it adds a visual verification layer to the timestamped check-in records.

New worker onboarding review. For operations managers onboarding new field workers, Replays allows supervisors to review the routes and behaviors of new team members during their first weeks without requiring in-person supervision. Patterns that need coaching are identifiable from the replay before they become embedded habits.

Performance coaching. Replays turns route and time data into a visual coaching tool. Rather than telling a worker that their routes appear inefficient, a manager can show them the visual playback of their actual day and have a concrete, evidence-based conversation about where time is being lost.

How Replays Connects to the Broader Reporting Picture

Replays provides the visual, playable version of the location data that Hellotracks also captures in structured report formats. The same trips and stops visible in a Replay can be exported as Timeline Reports, Mileage Reports, or client-facing Place Activity Reports from the reports and statistics section.

For field sales operations reviewing territory coverage, Replays shows how representatives are actually working their territories day by day. For operations building automated client proof of service, Replays is the visual verification layer that complements the timestamped documentation record. For teams using digital forms for job documentation, Replays provides the spatial context that completes the picture of each field visit.

FAQs

What is the Hellotracks Replays feature?

Replays is a location history playback feature in Hellotracks that allows administrators and operators to watch a field worker's recorded route play back automatically on the map, exactly as it occurred. It uses a Time Slider for manual scrubbing to any point in the day and a Play button for automatic animated playback of the full route in chronological order.

How do I access Replays in Hellotracks?

Navigate to Location from the main menu, then select Location History. Choose the team member and date, then switch to the Timeline view. Click the back arrow to open the Time Slider, then click the Play button on the map to begin the automatic route Replay.

What do the route colors mean during a Hellotracks Replay?

Route waypoint colors indicate movement speed. Purple indicates faster speeds such as highway driving. Dark blue indicates moderate speed on urban roads. Light blue indicates low speed close to stopping. White indicates intermittent GPS signal or inconsistent speed updates. Green indicates slow active movement such as walking or moving indoors. These colors allow you to assess the worker's movement patterns throughout the day at a glance.

Can I use Replays to investigate a client dispute about a field visit?

Yes. Replays shows the exact route a field worker traveled on any given day, including arrivals and departures at specific locations with visual timing on the map. Combined with the automatic geofencing-based check-in timestamps available in Hellotracks, Replays provides an objective, visual record of where the worker was and when - suitable for resolving disputes about visit timing or presence.

Is Replays available on all Hellotracks plans?

Yes. Location History, including the Time Slider and Replay functionality, is available across Hellotracks plans. The Replay feature is accessed via the Timeline view in Location History from the web dashboard. Field workers do not need to take any additional action - the route data is captured automatically whenever tracking is active.
